Seeing this feature, “The Big Idea” from Vogue Australia’s July 2012 edition, got me quite excited about my last ASOS order which was mostly comprised of very similar, long sleeve oversized tops. The trend is, basically, extreme proportions- BIG jacket, skinny pants, or vice versa- nothing particularly new except that it’s exaggerated and a lot of big houses like ACNE and Celine are doing it. I don’t particularly think this trend is going to be a long term thing- even the Vogue writer was a bit, ‘NO. Seriously? Big is a good thing now?’- and in most cases it’s not very flattering. But a nice big top and skinny jeans; that’s a nice nod to the oversized idea without going too trend crazy.
I bought a lot of these the other week. Sometimes my brain just does a little flip and I have to have a dozen versions of a very particular thing; i.e., leather shorts, coloured ankle boots, dark nail polishes… you name it. It’s not a good whim to indulge often- bad for the wallet, and I judge myself later once the madness has cleared.
I’m chalking it up to personal progress that I only kept ONE of this latest category of splurge: the Whistles Peggy Linen top. It helped that the quality was standout from all the others I bought; the fabric is artfully cut to be big but nicely draped and feminine, and the linen feels sturdy and long-lasting. It’s just a tiny bit less sugar-glider than the ASOS top in loose knit that I reviewed last week, which is perfect.
I also really love the neckline detail- see below- this was not evident in the ASOS picture, so it was a nice surprise.

I saw this article! Loved the pants from Chloe, but otherwise, I totally get what you mean. Not the most flattering stuff.
